The Start
After a lot of research into the breed and talking to as many different Bernese owners as possible we got our first Bernese in 1986 from Gordon & Lindsay Bridges. We called her Kander (Liskarn Bryna) and she lived up to everything that we had ever read about Bernese, we were well and truly besotted with her and the breed.

Starting Carting
When Kander was just one year old we went to a G.B. Club Championship Show at Newark, which we entered for fun, not knowing anything about showing & she won a first prize, but more important than that , we saw our first Bernese with a cart, I think it belonged to Sonja Gorbould.
Martyn enjoys doing a bit of woodwork so he thought it might be a good idea to make a cart as a winter project. By the Garden Party next spring we arrived with dog, cart & harness and with the help of John & Micky Emptage soon had Kander pulling her cart and by the end of that day we had completed our first working cart course.

By 1988 we started appearing at public events with some other enthusiasts and gradually the Northern Bernese Carters evolved.

After a few years a few friends got together and formed the Pennine Bernese Carters which now takes over our summer months &
pre-Christmas and sees us travelling to steam fairs to meet with friends and show off our beautiful dogs. We now have 5 carts,
motor home, trailer, Swiss costumes, flags etc. etc.
